| In 1977, an accountant named Jerry
Nowaski was unsatisfied with his career. One weekend, he attended
a house party. While mingling throughout the party, he noticed
the host was struggling, to play continuous dance music on
his home stereo system. While watching the beleaguered host
fumble through an assortment of tapes and records, Jerry was
inspired with an idea. After careful planning, Jerry invested
his money into professional audio equipment, including two
turntables, a microphone, speakers, amplifier, records, and
a van. He then marketed his new idea as an affordable alternative
to bands for weddings and other special events. Working from
the garage of his home, Jerry created a market niche that
would spawn the Bay Area's original mobile disc jockey service.
Invariably competition arose from others wishing to copy
the novelty of the idea. Motivated to maintain an advantage
over his competitors, Jerry continued to reinvest his money
into more marketing and equipment. By 1985, the success
and demand for his business had grown substantially. No
longer working from a garage, the operation now required
two office-warehouses to store a growing record library,
fifteen sound and lighting systems, and a fleet of ten vans!
With over fifty employees, Jerry had built the largest mobile
dj company in Northern California.
The company's new employees, including myself, were basically
recruited as entry-level road crew, before eventually becoming
djs. The road crew was responsible for transporting and
setting up the equipment, in addition to assisting the dj.
Due to the volume of shows the business was generating,
a job as a "roadie" provided an excellent opportunity
to work with different djs and observe their styles, skills,
and techniques. As a result, everyone associated with the
business learned and benefited from the early experience
of Jerry and his original core of djs.
Unfortunately, in 1989, Jerry contracted cancer and became
very sick. The stress of running his business became more
and more strenuous as he fought the disease with chemotherapy
treatments. Before eventually passing from the cancer in
January of 1990, Jerry sold his business to another competitor.
During his relatively short life, Jerry helped many individuals
establish themselves as professional djs. The training,
experience, and opportunity provided by Jerry inspired myself
and many others to continue independent careers in the disc
jockey field.
Today's DJ's AND MC's originated from that inspiration
and we continue to represent the high level of professionalism
we helped establish. Since 1989, our mission has been to
provide the Bay Area with a reliable source for disc jockey
personalities, customized music, and quality sound and lighting
systems. We guarantee customers that we'll arrive on time
with a plan, a commitment to carry it out; and then execute
it.
DJ's AND MC's remembers the original pioneers of the mobile
disc jockey field and we thank them for their guidance.
We understand that our success is directly related to the
satisfaction of the customer, and therefore, we believe
every event is our most important event.
Today, DJ's AND MC's continues to operate on these principals,
as we seek to improve our service and provide the Bay Area's
complete mobile disc jockey.
